Bible Study

Bible study is the 2nd and 3rd Sundays of each month instead of a regular service.

This is when we delve deeper in the scriptures, like the Bereans, to better understand what we are reading. Some people think we should not question God, but there are times when those hard questions nag at you like “why did God let the satan attack Job” or when a hard saying of Jesus like “if you call someone a fool you are liable to the fire of gehenna” just gets in the way of your faith. All over the Bible the Psalmists and prophets were constantly asking God some tough questions when they don’t understand what’s happening to them. And so, we, like them should not shy away from asking too. We might not get all the answers we are looking for, but we come away with a better understanding of the passages we are studying and knowing that our God is a big and does not feel threatened by our questioning.

Week 10 – Honoring Christ in Your Marriage – Husband
November 22, 2015
Study

The First Letter of Peter: Holy Living in the Midst of Fiery Trials.

Husband, do you see your wife as a gift from God and thank Him for her, or do you see her only as objects to be used? Do you encourage her and give her compliments and praise, or do you think that she is there solely to please your every whim? Do you habitually put her down or do you show her respect and listen to her? (These questions, I believe, can also be asked of wives.)

Peter encourages husbands to conduct themselves in a Christ-like manner by showing respect, dignity and gentleness to their wives. They need to understand that the wife is the “weaker partner” physically and in need of their care, protection and strength and is the co-heir of the grace of life. Should the wife or husband not conduct themselves in the manner dictated by our Lord, their prayers will be hindered.

Questions
  1. What is the first word Peter begins with in addressing husbands?
  2. What do you think it means for the husband to live with his wife in “an understanding way?”
  3. What further instruction is given to the husband?
  4. How is the Believing husband to view his wife?
  5. What warning does Peter give to a Believing husband if he fails to adhere to these exhortations?

Answers

  1. Peter starts with “likewise”. He is still talking about submission. A husband gets his authority to be leader of his household from Christ – (See I Corinthians 11:3) and he is in submission to Christ.
  2. It means a believing husband must be considerate of his wife. Understanding that she is different from him emotionally and physically and to be sensitive to her needs.
  3. To honor her and show respect to her? Displaying patience and gentleness and not bitterness, irritability and put-downs.
  4. As ‘the weaker partner’ physically who needs his care, protection and strength.
  5. His prayers will be hindered.
Selected Scripture Verses
I Peter 3:7

Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.
